Q13: War Dance

I remembered another African movie.  War Dance is about a national music competition, but it also stresses the political situations and a way to escape the violence.  Watch and connect to readings.

Q12: The Last King of Scotland

This film explores Idi Amin's effect on Uganda.  Connect the images with ones from our readings.

Q11: Constant Gardener

The mystery of this film revolves around political tensions and social conditions in Africa.  Watch and respond.

Q10: Hotel Rwanda

This film explores the international responses to the Rwandan genocide.  Watch and respond.

Q9: Lost Boys of Sudan

John Bul Dau, who wrote two excerpts that you read in the Africa unit, is one of the Lost Boys.  If you watch this documentary, you will see him and hear more of his story.  Watch the trailer and connect the images with one of the excerpts.

Q8: Invictus

Invictus explores the importance of rugby to Mandela and how he used a sport to attempt to unite a country.  Watch and respond.

Q7: Goodbye Bafana

This film explores the relationships Mandela fostered during his imprisonment.  Watch and respond.

Q6: Blood Diamond

This was a popular release a few years ago.  Parts of the film are amazing, especially ones with Hounsou in it.  What current event news or political cartoons does the trailer remind you of and why?

Q5: Munyurangabo

This film is about the Rwandan genocide.  How do some of the images echo those in the readings?  Watch and respond.

Q4: I Dreamed of Africa

This film is about life in Kenya, as seen through the eyes of foreigners.  Watch and respond.  (Pay attention also to the musical cues - in your opinion, are they effective or distracting?)

Q3: Beat the Drum

This award winning film touches upon the subjects of AIDS in Africa.  Watch the trailer and respond.

Q2: The Gods Must Be Crazy

Another old film and the trailer does not do it justice.  However, what similarities do you notice in the trailer and the readings?

Q1: Dry White Season

This is an older film, but it's still a good one.  In what ways are the themes similar to ones we have read in the Africa unit?
